Note
British Officer Gallant. Refuses to Prosecute Woman He Accused of Robbing Him. Special to The Washington Post. New York, March 19. -- Douglas Edmund Hope, captain of a troop of Thornycroft's Cavalry during the Boer War, who alleged that he was robbed in a West Thirty-eighth house last Thursday morning of $60 and a ticket to London, went to the West Side court this morning to appear against Laura Chevalier, who had been arrested on his complaint. "I would rather have been struck by a tram car than to have had this thing happen," said Capt. Hope. "I am to be married soon." The woman was discharged at the captain's request. Capt. Hope is a member of an English family which has a long military record. He was a second lieutenant in the Prince of Wales' North Staffordshire Regiment, doing service in China, when the Boer War commenced. He was then called to South Africa to command a troop of cavalry formed by Col. Thornycroft of the refugees from Johannesburg. While he was on outpost duty in May, 1900, his horse was killed beneath him and he himself was wounded, and he was sent home. He returned to duty, and was in the saddle when the war ended.
